Class Descriptions

At Yoga Northwest we offer a wide variety of classes and levels to help everybody enjoy and experience all the wonderful benefits of Yoga, step by step. Each level has a suggested time period before advancing to the next level. Yet, some people progress faster and others are satisfied staying in the same level for years, which is totally ok, too. We are happy to support and encourage everybody individually on their Yoga journey.

LEVEL I classes introduce beginning Yoga students and students new to the Iyengar method, to a balanced program of flexibility, core strength, postural alignment, breathing, relaxation and awareness.

LEVEL I-II classes are for students with 3 to 6 months experience in Iyengar Yoga who are steady and comfortable in the standing poses, “crazy dog” and shoulder balance. This class is also great for students who have a minimum of 6 months experience in any other school of Yoga, but are new to the Iyengar method, and are healthy, fit and without injury.

LEVEL II classes are for students who can do full arm balance, shoulder balance, headbalance, have a personal practice and 1 year of Yoga experience. Level II focuses on refining all the Yoga asanas and introduces deeper backbends.

LEVEL II-III is for students with a minimum of 2 years experience in Iyengar yoga, who have a personal practice and can do full arm balance, 5 minute head balance and shoulder balance each and are ready to explore deeper into the depth of Yoga.

EARLY BIRD YOGA  All Levels (I to II).  Start the day with Yoga poses that will stretch, strengthen and invigorate your body and mind; preparing you for the day’s activity with centered and uplifting energy. This class meets two or three mornings a week and will help you establish as strong daily practice. After completing this course you can continue with our weekly regular classes and prorate the remaining fee.

GENTLE YOGA/BACKCARE I is for people with back, neck, knee or shoulder problems, are plus-sized, elderly, or weak and need a slow paced class.

GENTLE YOGA/BACKCARE II is for students who have “graduated” from the gentle yoga/backcare class, but still need gentle exercises due to old injuries or physical restrictions.

PRENATAL YOGA offers a nurturing, informative environment to help prepare for birth. Through specifically developed poses and breathing techniques, women learn deep relaxation and gain strength and confidence for pregnancy, labor and delivery. You can start or end our prenatal classes depending on where you are in your pregnancy. Fee can be prorated accordingly.

RESTORATIVE YOGA focuses on poses to help students unwind, stretch, and breathe. The class includes various poses supported by bolsters and blankets that induce deep relaxation and rejuvenation. Everybody with at least 3 months yoga experience (Gentle II or higher) and no acute physical limitations is welcome.

PRANAYAMA I (Yoga Breathing) is for students with 1 year of Iyengar Yoga experience. This class will focus on reclined breathing to revitalize the body, calm the heart, quiet the mind and expand the awareness. Is offered during Fall and Winter Quarters.

PRANAYAMA II (Advanced Yoga Breathing) is for students who are ready to go deeper and learn seated pranayama. Prerequisite: Pranayama I or previous pranayama experience from classes or workshops and have a daily breathing practice. This class is often offered during the Spring.

KIDS YOGA (Ages 6-10) is a great class for our young people to help them gain flexibility, core strength, and coordination in their growing bodies, and prepare them for school, sports, and life with increased concentration, confidence and a positive body image. This class is not offered at the moment, but we are working to bring it back soon!

YOGA FOR TEENS (Ages 11-16) is tailored to the energy and physical needs of this age group with basic, fun Yoga poses for strength, flexibility and relaxation.  The classes will focus on breathing and alignment to cultivate concentration and body-awareness.  This non-competitive practice and exploration will help teens find balance and ease in their daily challenges of school, sports and life. 

PRIVATE SESSIONS can be beneficial for students with injuries to learn how to modify poses for individual needs. Private classes are also helpful to encourage individual progress for students with challenges in specific poses due to lack of flexibility or strength. If a student new to yoga wants to join a class midterm, private sessions will be necessary to get a good start and catch up with the group. Fees for private sessions are $75 per hour. Please check with the office for available teachers and times.
