What is Yoga?
Yoga is an ancient art developed
over three thousand years ago in
the foothills of the Himalayas.
The science of yoga has endured

of a practice to help people deal
with their daily stresses and challenges
in a more graceful and empowering
way. Yoga affects a person's life
on all levels in body, mind and
spirit. It brings physical health
and stamina, mental steadiness
and poise, and spiritual
awareness.
What is Iyengar Yoga?
At Yoga Northwest we follow the school of Iyengar Yoga, which is a dynamic and rigorous form of Yoga that focuses on balance, strength, stamina, flexibility and relaxation, with an emphasis on alignment, breath and awareness for health, vitality and inner peace.
Who is B.K.S. Iyengar?
Our teacher, Shri B.K.S. Iyengar, is the foremost living authority of yoga today. He resides in Pune, India and at age 86 is still a devoted practitioner. He has devoted most of his life to the practice and teaching of yoga and has trained thousand of students and teachers around the world. B.K.S. Iyengar has revitalized
the ancient art of yoga and made
it accessible to our modern man
in a dynamic, safe, and effective
way. He has also explored ways
to use yoga to help people with
injuries and illnesses, adapting
the classical poses with the use
of yoga props to enhance freedom
of circulation, breath and healing.
His therapeutic approach to yoga
has been very affective in helping
people with back, neck and knee
problems, as well as various heart

Iyengar is the author of the most
respected books on yoga, including "Light
on Yoga", "Light on Pranayama",
and "The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali."
